Topss Induction
Topss Induction |
The aims of the Topss induction is to ensure that all care understand the needs and expectations of the service user and their responsibility for working competently within the workforce. Knowledge is tested via a work book being completed and then marked.
This is delivered over a three day period and fully covers the five standards. The TOPSS induction
also covers the core units for Health and Social Care Level 2 as well as some
optional units within the award Including Knowledge Evidence

Moving & Handling |
The aims of this course are to provide delegates with the knowledge and skills of correct moving and handling procedures, assessing risk and reducing this risk within their working environment. Knowledge is tested via a questionnaire at the end of the session.
This is run over one full day. The course looks at the following:
• The Statistics surrounding people handling
• The Legislation surrounding health and safety – this also looks at the employees responsibilities in relation to health and safety in general. Legislation explored includes
1. The Moving & Handling Operations 1992
2. The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
3. The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1998
4. The Human Rights Act 1998
5. The lifting Operations and Equipment Regulations 1998
• A basic introduction to the anatomy of the spine and it’s components, we also look at how the body moves and protects itself in relation to body movement and joint function
• Explore bad posture and it’s consequences in adult life
• Explore the principals of movement and biomechanics
• An insight into unsafe lifting practises.
• Practical sessions lasting 4hrs where the delegates use small handling aids and where appropriate hoists and other lifting aids / equipment.

Emergency First Aid |
½ Day course
The aims of this course are to enable delegates to have an awareness of basic life support in the care environment knowledge of the topic is tested via a questionnaire at the end of the session. At the end of the course delegates will have basic skills to save a life through being able to perform CPR and other life saving techniques.
The following are explored:
• The Principals of First Aid
• Action plan - get help D R A B C
• The recovery position
• Resuscitation
• Coping with different emergencies
• First Aid boxes
• Reporting
Practical session
• Each delegate must put another delegate into the recovery position.
• Perform Mouth to Mouth and Cardiac Massage on a resuscitation dummy
1 Day Course
The Appointed Persons First Aid certificate is a full one day course
The aims of this course are to enable delegate to have a sound knowledge
of first Aid.
The syllabus remains the same as above; delegates go through a more thorough understanding of incidents as well as an understanding of the HSAWA including accident/incident reporting.

Food Hygiene Awareness |
½ day course
The aims of this course are to introduce care workers to food safety within the workplace. Knowledge of the topic is tested via a questionnaire at the end of the session

• Different types of bacteria
• The multiplication of bacteria
• Safe storage of food
• Personal hygiene
• Preparation of different food types

Protection of Vulnerable Adults |
1 full day
The aims of this course are to enable care workers to have an understanding of adult protection. Knowledge is tested via a questionnaire at the end of the session
The following topics are explored
• Current legislation including Multi agency Procedures and GSCC
• Who is a vulnerable adult?
• Where abuse occurs
• Types of abuse
• How to recognise abuse
• The effects of abuse
• How to report suspicion of abuse

Due to the course content this course is linked to all units in Health and Social Care but in particular –
Observations and reporting |
1 full day
The aims of this course are to familiarise care workers to the types of basic observations,
monitoring and recording of these.
At the end of this course delegates will be able to perform basic observations
report and record their findings. They will also be able to operate safely and
within current legislation.
Topics explored are –
• Legislation surrounding reporting and recording.
• How to and what to report and record
• Blood Pressure (BP) – what is it, the purpose of monitoring, how
to take and record.
• Temperature - what is it, the purpose of monitoring, how to take and
record.
• Pulse - what is it, the purpose of monitoring, how to take and record.
• Input and Output - what is it, the purpose of monitoring, how to measure
and record.
• Blood Sugar (BM) - what is it, the purpose of monitoring, how to take
and record.
During the course we also look at
• Incontinence – the definition of and possible causes.
• Pressure sores and their management - the definition of and possible
causes.
• Stoma care and their management.
• Health and safety – Infection control, Sharps disposal, clinical
waste.
